Takeuchi (竹内, Takeuchi?) is a supporting character in the Koe no Katachi series. He was the homeroom teacher of Shōya Ishida, Shōko Nishimiya and their peers during their sixth grade year at Suimon Elementary.

Personality[]

Takeuchi appears to be a rather uncaring and self-righteous individual, especially in his outlook on the bullying of both Shōko Nishimiya and Shōya Ishida. Soon after Shōko’s transfer into his class, Takeuchi begins to see her as a burden and is quick to hand some of his responsibility for her onto Naoka, who is also another student he should be guiding.

When Shōya begins bullying Shōko, Takeuchi is aware of the situation but rarely takes action to stop him, failing to even properly explain why he shouldn’t pick on Shōko when he does bother to punish him. Takeuchi continues to ignore Shōya’s actions until the principal gets involved, where Takeuchi blames Shōya completely for the bullying of Shōko, despite the clear involvement of other students and himself as a teacher. His ignorant behavior continues when Shōya becomes the target of bullying, refusing to believe or help his student when Shōya sincerely looks to him for any assistance.

Even when he meets Shōya and Shōko again years later, his personality remains largely unchanged, something that deeply angers Shōya. Takeuchi views Shōya as a respectable man based on appearances and choice of high school alone.

Physical appearance[]

In his younger years, Takeuchi is a fairly plain looking guy with light brown hair and glasses, usually wearing dark track clothes and a plain t-shirt, even during lectures. True to his personality, his expression is rather apathetic and uncaring.

When Shōya Ishida sees Takeuchi again years later, Takeuchi looks noticeably older though his demeanor is a lot more friendly despite how little he seemed to have changed personality wise.

History[]

During their time in elementary school, Takeuchi is Shōya Ishida and Shōko Nishimiya's sixth grade. Even though Shōko can't hear what he is saying, he doesn't change his teaching style to accommodate her, which contributes to the students resenting Shōko due to feeling obligated to help her keep up on notes. When he learns that Shōya is picking on Shōko, Takeuchi lectures him about morality rather than explaining why bullying Shōko is something he shouldn't do. He even empathizes with Shōya's negative feeling about Shōko, which only justifies Shōya's actions rather than condemning them. When the principal intervenes regarding the bullying inflicted on Shōko, he gets angry and indirectly declares Shōya as solely responsible for the harassment.

Years later, Takeuchi sees Shōya and Shōko again when they visit Suimon Elementary with Satoshi Mashiba in Chapter 35. Takeuchi believes that Shōya has become a better person just by seeing his uniform. Shōya loathes Takeuchi for his reaction and the uncaring nature he describes Shōya's past with. Satoshi loses patience with Takeuchi justifying his ignoring of Shōko's bullying before throwing water in his face and leaving the building. Shortly after, Shōko arrives and Takeuchi is amazed to see that Shōya can communicate with her in sign language, now certain that Shōya has indeed become a respectable person. After Shōya ends up in a coma, Satoshi and Shōko come back to apologize for their last visit. Takeuchi is amused with Satoshi's behavior and has a change of heart about letting them film on the elementary school's campus.
